How Do I get Traffic to my blog?

Getting traffic (in general), and Followers (in particular) is simply the result of patience and persistence.  If you enjoy publishing a blog (which is what you're supposed to be doing), the hard work won't be so noticeable, once you get started.

Your blog won't be searchable automatically, or immediately - in Google, or any search engine hit list.

You need to publish content, that's interesting and relevant to your prospective readers - and make your blog interesting to the search engines.  Interesting / Useful Content, plus Reputation, is how you get traffic - and in turn, Followers, readers, subscribers, and viewers.  Do a little bit each day, or each week, and repeat as much as possible.  None of this is "do this now, or never" or "do this once, then forget it".

Start properly - learn to find, and to share, the blog URL directly with your family and friends.

[FAQ] What's The BlogSpot And / Or Domain URL Of Your Blog?

Having your blog searchable on the web won't happen automatically, nor will it happen immediately.  A lot of hard work, and patience, is required.

Besides friends and family, your initial readers will come through the "Next Blog" link, though not randomly based upon posting activity.  You'll need this initial traffic.

Most long term readers will initially find your blog through search engine hits, from meaningful searches for actual blog content.  Not from searching for your blog by name.

Your blog should contain original and relevant content about you or your business.  If the content is about your business, make sure that it's a legal business, selling a legitimate product.

If you pay folks to read your blog, or to click on the ads in the blog, you'll probably get some initial traffic improvement.  This may lead to later classification as a spam blog, though.

You have to get the search engines involved, but you won't get listed by them, automatically.  You have to do some work, let them know that you're there, that you want to be listed, and that you are worthy of being listed.

  • Get your friends to link to your blog, where your blog is relevant.
  • Participate in forums, where your blog is relevant, and include the URL.
  • Comment on other blogs, in relevant comments, and include the URL.
  • Put relevant and useful content in your blog.
  • Some search engines may index your blog using the site feed.  Be sure to activate the feed.
  • When you have done all of the above, your blog will have some weight.  Submit your blog to the search engines, for indexing.
  • Post frequently, and keep the content of your blog updated, regularly.

None of this happens overnight.  Search engines can take months to index your blog fully.  Even when your blog is indexed, don't expect for a search to some key element in your blog to give you an entry on the first page of the search hits.

Remember that owners of other blogs, like yours, are actively working to be indexed by Google, too.  Your success comes at their expense - and their success comes at your expense.  When your blog is indexed, don't expect to stay on Page One forever, without hard work.

Try to ignore the trolls who babble about SEO.  SEO is not magic - it's hard work.

Use Google Webmaster Tools, and Yahoo Site Explorer, to watch the indexing progress, keep an eye for problems, and know when the blog is indexed.  And to setup a sitemap, which is useful to the search engines.

And use a visitor meter, to know objectively when you get readers, and how your readers find the blog.  Don't use comments, or lack of comments, to measure viewer activity.  Both FlagCounter, SiteMeter, and StatCounter are free, easy to install, and will give you the beginning blogger the detail about your visitors, that you need and can use easily.  The first gives you simple visitor counts, tabulated by country.  The last two give you rudimentary visitor logs, as well as simple visitor counts.   Google Stats, a recently added built-in accessory, is steadily improving in functionality.

Understand the differences between Followers, readers, and subscribers.  Know what traffic helps make your blog popular, and how it makes your blog popular.
